The Control Surface started as a personal project after 15 years of owning rental properties and wondering what the full picture actually looked like.

Back in 2010, a few friends from school and I pooled our resources and bought our first rental property. It was exciting, passive income, building wealth, a great reason to stay personally connected, the whole dream. Over the years, we grew to around 10 properties.
We had a great property manager handling the day-to-day. They sent us updates on everything; work orders, invoices, lease renewals, inspection reports, vendor quotes. The information was always there, arriving one email at a time.
But I started noticing something: I could never see the full picture. When a partner asked how things were going across the portfolio, I didn't have a good answer. When tax season came around, I'd spend a weekend in Gmail trying to reconstruct what happened over the past year. When I wanted to compare vendor costs or check if an issue was really resolved, the information was scattered across hundreds of threads.
The individual emails made sense when I read them. But no one was assembling them into the bigger story; the maintenance timelines, the vendor relationships, the cost patterns across properties. That picture existed in my inbox, just never in a form I could actually see.
So I built The Control Surface. Not as a business plan, but as a tool I needed for myself and my partners. Something that could take all those property management emails and assemble them into the complete picture that was always there but never visible.
Turns out I wasn't the only one who wanted to see that picture.
